Why People Buy LegalZoom Anyway

Because they have heard of it. That sounds dismissive and it is not meant to be. In a market where most of the names are interchangeable and half of them appeared in the last five years, recognition is a real signal, and LegalZoom has two decades of operating history plus a service catalogue running well past this one appointment. Some owners want the option their accountant will nod at. Fair enough.

$249, Flat, and It Renews Itself

LegalZoom charges $249 a year for registered agent service. No first-year discount showed up in our July 2026 check, so the price is at least honest about itself. It also auto-renews, which is the part worth pausing on.

A subscription that renews without asking is convenient in the same motion that it is expensive. No approval, no annual reconsideration, no moment where anyone weighs $249 against what the service actually does. It just recurs, and it keeps recurring for as long as the card on file stays valid.

What it does is one thing: hold a Georgia street address that accepts lawsuits and state mail on your behalf. The job is defined by statute, not by vendor. LegalZoom performs it. We perform it. The Corporations Division record does not distinguish between us, and neither does a process server.

Five years: $1,245 there, $495 here. The $750 difference buys familiarity and nothing else, because the underlying appointment is the same appointment on the same register.

What $99 Covers

The Georgia street address on your public filings. Same-day scanning of anything served on you, emailed the day it lands. Deadline reminders before the state's window opens. A document portal. Renewal at the identical $99, every year, with no tier sitting above it waiting to be sold in.

$99 beats $249 by a wide margin and still is not the lowest number in Georgia. BetterLegal's is $90. Among the lowest published rates here is the claim we will defend, and we would rather print it ourselves than have you discover it on a comparison page somewhere else.

The Georgia Paperwork That Retires LegalZoom

Short version: $30 and one filing. This state issued no dedicated change-of-agent form, so the agent line updates on the amendment, Form CD 920, available any month of the year. If you happen to be inside the January to April window with your annual registration still unfiled, name the new agent there instead and pay nothing beyond the $60 that filing already carries. Before you file, measure the replacement against O.C.G.A. § 14-11-209. The registered office has to be a real street address here in Georgia, identical to the business office the agent operates from, and the agent has to be there during business hours. A post office box fails. A mail drop fails. Plenty of inexpensive arrangements fall over on that rule alone, so it is worth confirming rather than assuming.

Do not fire first. Appoint the new agent, submit the filing, confirm the record shows the change, and cancel LegalZoom after that. The auto-renewal is annoying but it is not urgent. An entity sitting on the Georgia register with nobody appointed to take a summons is urgent, and the two situations are easy to confuse when you are in a hurry to stop paying $249.

The practical version: keep both live for a couple of weeks. Whatever fraction of the LegalZoom term you forfeit is already spent money, and it is cheaper than the alternative by a margin nobody needs a calculator for.
